High Point University Sophomore Takes on New Job


Sydney Cheuvront, a sophomore journalism student at High Point University, began working as a Human Communication S.I., or supplementary instructor, this semester.

Cheuvront became a tutor for a course called Mediated Communication during her freshman year after being recommended by Professor Kris Bell.  After tutoring this subject for a semester, Cheuvront asked to be switched to tutoring Human Communication.

"I liked tutoring, but I really wanted to become an S.I. to help more students, so I just asked," Cheuvront said in an interview Tuesday.

An S.I. has tutoring hours during which students can make weekly appointments, and they also hold four hours of office hours a week so students can just walk in and ask for help.  The S.I. also sits in on a class so that he or she knows exactly what is going on and can assist students like the professor.

At the beginning of her sophomore year, Cheuvront went to a tutor orientation meeting where Dr. Craig Curty, the chair of Academic Services and Tutoring at High Point University, told tutors to speak with him him if they were interested in becoming an S.I.  She went up to him at the end of the meeting and was told to contact Professor Bell, who was now her adviser.

"I first asked Dr. Curty and then Professor Bell," Cheuvront said.  "After explaining to Professor Bell what an S.I.'s duties were, she said that she would love to have me.  Now I sit in on and assist one of her classes."

Besides her duties as an S.I., Cheuvront is also involved in Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Mu, the Leadership Fellows Program, and the High Point University Peer Mentor Program, all while taking a full load of classes.

"I like to be busy," Cheuvront said.  "It makes the day go by faster and keeps me on top of everything.  Plus, I love the Human Communication class, so I don't look at it as extra work."

Cheuvront plans to continue being an S.I. for the duration of her time at High Point University.

"I really love helping out students and especially listening to their speeches," Cheuvront said.  "I'm not an expert, but I like to help as much as I can.  This is the perfect job for me."
